Looking Beyond Numbers: Centering Equity in the Health of Young People

All young people deserve the opportunity to thrive. However, not all young people have access to the same opportunities and resources that support good health and wellbeing. Differences in health are often driven by social, economic, and environmental conditions, including historic and ongoing inequities such as racism, heterosexism, and gender-based discrimination, rather than individual choices alone.

The data on this hub highlight differences in health and experiences among young people. While data often focus on challenges and unmet needs, understanding these differences between students with different backgrounds is critical for creating change and designing solutions to best support young people. We encourage users to consider how unfair systems and treatment can contribute to the differences we see, rather than attributing them to the communities themselves.

At the same time, we believe data are only part of the story. Communities across Western MA are already building on their strengths and implementing innovative approaches to support young people. By bringing together data sharing the voices of students, resources, and examples of strategies from across the region, the Youth Health Data Hub of Western MA aims to foster learning, collaboration, and collective action to help all young people thrive.
